British geographer and Royal Canadian Geographical Society Fellow Edward Shackleton (later Lord Shackleton) organized the Oxford University Ellesmere Land Expedition of 1934 and 1935 to survey uncharted territory on Ellesmere Island. Its mountains, which include Nunavut's highest, were named the British Empire Range, by the expedition's members.
