Ben Nelms: Western Sandpipers fly in a murmuration pattern near Brunswick Point in Ladner, B.C., on April 24, 2018. I took this photograph while working on a story for Canadian Geographic in 2018 on the effects of industry on the vast ecosystem of the Fraser River delta near Vancouver. Every year for a couple weeks, thousands upon thousands of migratory Western Sandpipers stop to feed on the delta of the Fraser River before heading North. I knew there would be a window of opportunity to photograph them so I spent a few days waiting in thick mud in the early morning hours.
